PINOY GROOVE EXPERIENCE (Philippine Popular Music Revisited):

Sharon Cuneta - “Kung Ako’y” from DJ’s PET (1978)

First PGE post in ages.

Not much to say.  From the Philippine’s “Megastar” on her first record, DJ’s PET in 1978.  She was 12.

Recorded in the milieu of the Manila Sound era but still wrapped in the warmth of the hazy sun of Philippine 60’s and early 70’s folk pop.  Written by the Pinoy Folk Rock duo Verde and Clarino (Tass Verdeflor and Len Clarino).  Something comforting about this song.  It’s at the junction of Pinoy Folk and the Manila Sound.  The acoustic guitar and string arrangement is at one with the dreamy keyboards and persistent bassline.  Add Mega’s doe eyed cooing and it’s all funky and sweet.  Maybe there’s just an inherent sadness and blurry eyed longing when I hear anything Philippines circa 1978.

Traces of Radiotron in MacArthur Park

Hey friends. Maya Santos and Rani de Leon, along with myself and other friends have been working on this short film as part of the collaborative founded by Maya, called Form follows Function. This is about the LA Hip Hop scene’s old stomping grounds in MacArthur Park called Radiotron. Please take the time to watch it and please share the love. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went in to this and I’m proud to be even remotely part of it. Special thanks to Carmelo Alvarez.

Los Angeles Through the Lens of Joel Quizon

Eye’Em mobile photography app featured my mobile photos of Los Angeles on their blog.

Really honored.  They’re super cool folks based out of Berlin.  Special shout to Stephanie at Eye’Em for reaching out to me to do a feature on LA.

Click the link above for more.

From EyeEm:

What comes to mind when someone mentions Los Angeles? Hollywood? Glitz and glam? That’s only a small part of this city. There are also many other smaller enclaves and areas that make the city special, which Joel Quizon helps us discover! The LA-based film maker is currently working on a series of short films about people and places in LA (A Different LA and Traces) and thus travels a lot through the city. Hop on board with Joel and see his version of The City of Angels!
