ONE ‘80

In the 80’s these extended, remix or dub versions of songs were a great way for the producers to stretch their legs and put on that 5 minute intro or extra long drum break.  The dub versions would emphasize the vocal break or they would add extra vocals making a rock song like “Cover Me” into a soul/reggae excursion.  The best examples of these are the extended or 12 inch version of pop songs because they are not limited to length for radio programmability.  It took whatever the best of that song had and gave you more of it.  With that you get a 9 minute version of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” or Chris Frantz’ ridiculous drum intro for Talking Head’s “Wild Wild Life” that seem to go on forever.

Some of the best producers like Arthur Baker, Jellybean Benitez, Steve Lillywhite, or David Morales took a crack at a Madonna track or a Clash record and most times they created a feast for the ears.  Sometimes for the dance floor other times the manipulation would be so left field that it would be strictly for the headphones.

I’ve finally been able to post the first three set on Soundcloud.  Hope to post more later.  Mostly soft mixed and the tracks almost in their entirety.

  1. REALITY WHICH IS TO COME - Yoko Ono sample from the Yoko and John conversation album.  Featuring more jazzy selections from Joe Jackson, Style Council, New Edition, etc.
  2. HIGHER DUB - Drum and bass heavy mix featuring Stevie Winwood, Level 42, Tears for Fears, Dead or Alive, Animotion, etc.
  3. GIRLS DUB - Dub, reggae, synth variations from Talking Heads, Human League, Soft Cell, The Clash, Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band, and Cindy Lauper.

Thanks for listening.
